Come put your interest in gourd art to use! Create a beautiful and functional gourd birdfeeder. These birdfeeders are great in your yard or as gifts. Step by step instructions will take you through the process from start to finish. Written instructions and all supplies will be provided by the instructor.

Santa Head: Working with Clay

Learn how to create clay heads and faces out of sculpty clay. These beautifully crafted 3 dimensional heads and faces can be added to or done directly on gourds. You can use this technique to create heads for a variety of projects, from old world Santa to beautiful dolls. We will be crafting a 3 dimensional Santa head from scratch, using an egg gourd. Heads can be added to a body crafted from a gourd. Instructor provides all supplies, including instruction packet, tool, and materials to work with. Bring a shoe box with you for transporting your head home.

Gourd Basket

Enjoy the satisfaction of adding beautiful weaving to your gourds. We will cover 2 twining techniques, how to create a spiral pattern, and finish it off with a three part rolled rim. Create your own unique combination of color and texture using sea grass and reed. If you have any interesting yarn you’d like to add for even more texture, bring it along. We will condition the gourd, create a satin smooth surface, and color with ink dyes, covering blending techniques as well. Students must bring: A pail for soaking materials, towel, spray bottle, scissors, and packing tool (if you have one), or a medium blade screw driver.Instructor will bring prepared gourds, sand paper, awls, ink dyes, wax, natural and dyed sea grass, reed, and other weaving materials. Some weaving experience helpful, but open to all.

Kokapelli Shadow Gourd with Feather

Students will use a gourd piece to create a hanging decoration. This can also be attached to a frame or shadow box. The background will be created using paint and rubber stamps. Feathers, leather lacing and beads will be added to create dimension. Approximate finished size is 5” X 5”. A hanger will be added with leather lacing. An in-depth handout will be available. Students may want to bring an apron, all other supplies provided by instructor; including pre-cut gourd piece, paints, brushes, feathers, beads, and lacing.

Students will learn about various embellishment techniques/products that can be used on gourds, including Friendly Plastic, wire, Angelina fibers, paper & fabric, polymer clay, and decoupage.
Students should bring:  a hair dryer/heat gun and scissors, if possible. Instructor will have several available for student use.
Instructor provides: Cleaned, cut, and sanded, gourd bowls; brushes, water basins, stains, jewelry and clay tools, wire, rotary cutters/mats/rulers, scissors, irons, griddle, craft oven, wax, Mod Podge, Angelina Fibers, Friendly Plastic, Sculpy Studio Clay, texture plates, Teflon heat-resistant sheets, and a variety of types of paper, fabric, cording/floss, skewers, instructions packets with photos of the sample project, and any other basic supplies needed.
