Students will learn to carve a 3-D effect on the gourd. They will apply a selected pattern and outline it with a woodburner. When completed, another part of the pattern will be outlined and then carved out with your woodburner. Color will be applied at this time to enhance the pattern already outlined, and guarantee the accuracy of the entire picture. Each student will need to bring their own adjustable temperature woodburner. You will need a tip that is shaped to cut. A Colwood tip “B” number 125335 can be ordered at 1-800-241-6748. The price is $12.95 and will last indefinitely. Instructor will furnish all other supplies including prepared gourd, patterns, and paint.

Santa Head: Working with Clay

Learn how to create clay heads and faces out of sculpty clay. These beautifully crafted 3 dimensional heads and faces can be added to or done directly on gourds. You can use this technique to create heads for a variety of projects, from old world Santa to beautiful dolls. We will be crafting a 3 dimensional Santa head from scratch, using an egg gourd. Heads can be added to a body crafted from a gourd. Instructor provides all supplies, including instruction packet, tool, and materials to work with. Bring a shoe box with you for transporting your head home.

Learn to make flowers, stems & leaves on pre-painted gourd, plus extra samples of roses, daffodils, violets, orchids, etc. Also make trims & other embellishments for your gourd work. Apoxie Sculpt is an amazing, easy to use, self-hardening, porcelain-like clay material. Entire class time will be devoted to sculpting and applying floral decoration. Work surface needs to be completely dry. Instructor furnishes all necessary materials (except gourd) including basic tools & supplies, and enough Apoxie Sculpt to complete project and additional flower samples. An illustrated instruction booklet with patterns will also be furnished.Students bring medium size round cleaned gourd (pre-painted inside & outside) with smooth sanded rim. Students should also bring a metal dinner knife (for shaping); coins (quarter, nickel & dime) for measuring; and a box large enough to hold finished project as work may not be completely dry at end of class.

Creating One-Of-A-Kind Embellishments For Gourds

Students will learn how to use a variety of materials including, but not limited to, paper clay, tyvek and fabric to create one-of-a-kind beads and embellishments to use on gourds. Stains, Pearl X or embossing powders will be applied as a finish. This finish will be enhanced with other trims as selected by the student. Wire will be used to add texture and a hanging loop to at least on of the beads. Hints and suggestions will be given to use other objects students have at home.
An in-depth handout will be available. Students bring: An embossing gun if you have one. Also, you may want to bring a face mask if you’re sensitive to odors. All other supplies are furnished including clay, Tyvek, fabric, embellishments rubber stamps, and other tools needed.

Faux Finishing Techniques

Students will learn techniques to create four (4) faux finishes; Turquoise, Granite, Leather, and Wood Grain, using paints, brushes, sponges, and mediums. There will be discussions on the proper use, care, and cleaning of brushes; other applications for these techniques; and how to research and create other types of faux finishes.

Students should bring an apron or smock to protect clothing. A hair dryer/heat gun, if possible. Instructor will have several available for student use.

Instructor provides: Cleaned, sanded, and base-coated 9”-11” martin gourd, brushes, water basins, acrylic paints, instruction packets with photos of the sample project, paper towels, palettes, plastic wrap, sea sponges, glazing mediums, etc.
